Future
Future
This mural was painted on the side of a local trailer park office building in 2012. It was designed by the Art Club at Franklin County High School. In response to youth graffitiing the wall and damaging property, a neighborhood mother asked me what we could do to entertain the kids during fall break. She was concerned that boredom and lack of opportunities to engage in positive activities would cause the kids in the park to damage it even further. We came up with the idea to paint a mural with the kids so they would have some pride and ownership of the place they live. The tree presents the park. A large oak tree, located near the office was a well known landmark by residents. Hands of the children are the leaves of the tree. The pathway represents education, with the FCHS mascot flying above the path. The city, outlined by the sun, represents the future. And of course the children represent the children who live in the park. I personally love this photo not only because of the special memories made but also because of the rays of sunshine that shine brightly through the trees, highlighting the building. Abraham Lincoln once said, “The best way to predict the future is to create it”. I pray the children who painted this mural have created the future they want, beyond this trailer park.
