Walk in My Shoes

Walk in My Shoes

This photo was taken of an art project that two of our KRUSH group (Kids Rising up through Support and Healing) students completed. KRUSH is a group that was created to help support students impacted by incarceration. We asked the students to think about the things they go through every day that most people aren't aware of. We wanted them to share what it is like to walk a day in "their shoes". The writing is a little hard to see, but the statements written on those shoes are very powerful and brought tears to my eyes. Some of their statements included ‘cps’, ‘parents in jail’, ‘yelled at 24/7’, ‘feeling like everything is my fault’, ‘taking depression meds’, ‘not seeing my brothers or sisters’, ‘taking care of my siblings’, ‘having a step- dad that isn't a good one’, etc.” The University of KY reports that 15% of all KY children are impacted by parental incarceration. That is double the national average.
